Hydroponics originated from the Greek words hydros “water” + ponos “labor”. It means growing plants in water with added nutrients without the presence of soil. Forms of Hydroponics has existed and practiced by early Babylonians and Aztecs. There are two types of Hydroponics namely Solution culture and Medium Culture. In Solution Culture there is no solid used to support the roots of the plant and in Medium Culture, the roots of the plants are supported with either gravel or stones. There is less labor required in a hydroponic system thus requiring less digging and weeding. Plants can be grown in locations which were impossible to grow plants such as desert areas or places with poor soil. There is no competition for nutrients and water, since each is fully accessible to the plants in the grow beds. More plants can be grown in smaller spaces that do not have to fight diseases, fungus and pests frequently found in soil. |
